In a nutshell

This study want to see what type of surgery results in a higher chance of breast cancer coming back, fat grafting or breast reconstruction. The study found that both types of surgery resulted in an equal chance of the breast cancer coming back.

Some background

Fat grafting is a surgical way to fill in holes in the tissue of the breast when a tumor has been cut out of it. It involves taking fat from a different part of the body and injecting it into the breast where the tumor was removed. Another option for treating breast cancer is to remove the whole breast. This is then followed by a surgery to create a new breast using implants. Some studies have suggested that fat grafting might result in a higher risk of the breast cancer coming back. This has not been confirmed.

Methods & findings

This study consisted of 587 patients. All the patients had breast cancer. The patients all had a tumor removed from the breast using surgery. Of these 587 patients, 287 had a fat graft to fill in the hole where the tumor was. The remaining 300 patients had breast reconstruction surgery. The patients were followed for five years to see if the cancer came back in the breast, or anywhere else in the body.

In the patients who had fat grafts, 8 out of 287 had the cancer come back. In the patients who had breast reconstruction, 11 out of 300 had the cancer come back in the breast. Both groups has the same rate of cancer coming back in a different body part. There were 22 patients in the fat graft group who had the cancer come back in a different body part. There were 21 patients in the breast reconstruction group who had the cancer come back in a different body part.

The bottom line

The study concluded that patients had the same chance of cancer coming back if they had a fat graft compared to if they had breast reconstruction surgery.

The fine print

This is a large study. Each patient in the fat graft group was matched with a patient in the breast reconstruction group for age, disease stage, and the type of tumor.
