In a nutshell
This study wanted to look at the effect of exercise on patients with breast cancer.
The study found that all types of exercise improved the fitness and tiredness levels of the patients.
Some background
Breast cancer and the treatments associated can be exhausting for the patients. This can lead to a decrease in their quality of life. Exercise is known to have many benefits. Other studies have shown specific types of exercise to be beneficial to women with breast cancer. It is not known if there is one particular type of exercise that is better than others.
Methods & findings
This study pulls together the results of many smaller studies. This study looked at results from 2525 patients. All of the patients had breast cancer.
Overall, a number of different types of exercise were examined. These included endurance training, resistance training, and a mixture of both. There are a number of ways to measure how exercise affects cancer treatment. A lot of these studies used surveys, where they asked the patients questions before they did the exercise programme, and after. Four studies looked at physical fitness. Three of these four studies saw improvements in physical fitness in the group who followed the exercise programme. In a number of studies, the patients who exercised had increased ability to use oxygen, which is a measure of how fit a person is. In one study, the patients felt that their tiredness level had decreased. There was no significant increase in quality of life found in any of the studies.
The bottom line
The study concluded that all types of exercise improve fitness and feelings of tiredness in patients with breast cancer.
The fine print
This is a large study that looked at data from lots of smaller studies.
